Muslim Student Association Hosts Iftar Dinner

The Muslim Students Association (MSA) sponsored an Iftar dinner at the School of Dental Medicine on August 16, to mark the breaking of the day’s fast. In observance of the month of Ramadan, many Muslim students at GSDM are fasting each day from dawn until dusk. A large group of students, of both Muslim and other faiths, came together in the Cafeteria to share in the tasty spread of Arabic and Mediterranean type food with baklava for dessert.

“During the fast Muslims abstain from food and water, so the Iftar meal was much appreciated by everyone at the end of a workday,” said organizer Nadia Malik DMD 13. “We had a great turnout of members from the predoctoral and postdoctoral programs and it was a great opportunity for everyone to meet each other. Our hope is that in the future this will become an annual School event sponsored by the MSA.”

Malik says that putting the dinner together was a real group effort and also credits Sabahat Hanif DMD 12, Zara Nensey DMD 14, and Akbar Saleem DMD 14 for playing large roles in the organization of the dinner.

MSA is a new student group at GSDM. They are currently working with the Office of Student Affairs to elect officers and Assistant Dean of Students Dr. Joseph Calabrese has agreed to be a temporary faculty advisor.
