GSDM Moves up Six Positions in 2016 QS World University Rankings by Subject

British-based company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released its second annual World University Rankings by Subject for Dentistry on March 22, 2016. In these new rankings, the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) placed 24th globally and eighth in the United States. In the first ever QS World University Rankings by Subject for dentistry, which were released in April 2015, GSDM placed 30th globally and eighth nationally. The 2016 rankings placed GSDM six positions ahead of the 2015 global ranking and in the same place as the 2015 national ranking.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject ranks universities from around the world in 42 fields with a score of 0 to 100. The rankings are designed to be utilized by prospective students hoping to identify top schools in their chosen field.
While the QS World University Rankings by Subject have been published annually since 2011, 2015 marked the first time that dentistry was added as a subject. Prior to this, a reputable ranking of world and U.S. dental schools had not existed.
In the 2016 rankings, GSDM came in eighth in the United States and 24th in the world with a score of 77.6. The score is an improvement from the 2015 score of 76.9.
“I am pleased to see that GSDM has moved up in the QS World University Rankings,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. “However, while moving up six positions in these rankings in just one year is certainly an impressive feat, we must continue to work hard to ensure that GSDM keeps improving its reputation on both a global and national stage as we achieve our vision of being the premier institution promoting excellence in dental education, research, oral healthcare, and community service in order to improve the overall health of the global population.”
To create the final 0-100 score, QS averages a 0-100 score for four categories: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, and “h-index” score.
The academic reputation number is determined by an annual survey of academics in which the academics are asked to list up to 10 domestic and 30 international institutions which they consider excellent for research in the given area. GSDM scored a 64.9 out of 100 in this category in 2016. Compared to a score of 56.6 in 2015.
The employer reputation number is determined by an annual survey of prospective employers in which the employers are asked to identify up to 10 domestic and 30 international institutions they consider excellent for the recruitment of graduates. GSDM scored a 66.9 out of 100 in this category in 2016, compared to a score of 60.4 in 2015.
The research citations per paper number is determined using data from Scopus. GSDM scored an 89.0 out of 100 in this category in 2016, compared to a score of 93.1 in 2015.
The h-Index score is based on the set of scientists’ most cited papers and the number of citations that he or she has received in other publications. GSDM scored an 82.4 out of 100 in this category in 2016, compared to a score of 86.5 in 2015.
