First Annual GSDM Sleep Disordered Breathing/Obstructive Sleep Apnea Symposium a Huge Success
Over the weekend of March 3 – 4, 2017, the first annual Sleep Disordered Breathing/Obstructive Sleep Apnea Symposium was hosted by the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) Continuing Education Department. The event was completely sold out, with 150 general dentists, orthodontists, and pediatric dentists in attendance at the Metcalf Trustee Center Trustee Ballroom located at One Silber Way, Boston from around the country. The two-day conference consisted of more than ten presentations and panel discussions from leading clinical researchers with evidence–based experience and information in the area of sleep disorders and sleep apnea.
The Course Directors for the Symposium were; Dr. Melih Motro, DDS, PhD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics, Dr. Michael Platt, MD, MSc, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and Dr. John Walker, DMD, MSc, Clinical Instructor, Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics. Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter was also in attendance, and delivered the opening remarks.
Due to the vast success of this year’s symposium, supported by Dean Hutter and Professor Will, the Office of Continuing Education at GSDM is looking to make the Symposium an annual event. Many attendees raved about their experience, and hope to share their findings with colleagues and other health professionals. “This was an excellent symposium on a fundamentally important subject to all general dentists and specialists, along with our MD colleagues who treat ENT, pulmonary and cardiology conditions of our shared patients,” said Dr. Robert L. Sanford, DMD.
The growing epidemic of Cardiomyopathy, Stroke, Obesity, Diabetes, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Headache, Pain, Fibromyalgia, Cognitive performance and children’s whole body development are all comorbid, secondary effects of nasal/oral airway obstruction and compensatory mouth breathing, being the origin.
The goal of the Symposium was to help participants understand why the traditional treatment of symptoms of the comorbidities with diet, cholesterol, exercise and medications continue to fail. New research shows that dentistry has a very important and newly discovered opportunity and responsibility to improve the quality and longevity of a person’s life and must interact with the new medical model.
