Dr. John Guarente Graduates from ADEA Leadership Institute

Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) Assistant Dean for Patient Services Dr. John Guarente graduated from the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Leadership Institute during the ADEA Annual Session in Dallas, Texas held March 28 – April 2.

The ADEA Leadership Institute is a year-long program designed to develop the nation’s most promising dental faculty and administrators into leaders in dental and higher education. Dr. Guarente was part of a 21 person class of fellows at the institute and described the opportunity to form relationships with other fellows as one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

"There is a level of comfort when you find 21 other people in similar professional roles to you that see the same problems, utilize the same solutions, and work to implement the same changes in dental education," said Dr. Guarente.

In order to graduate, he completed four phases of the program and worked on a final project with members of his class. The project was titled, Academic Integrity: A Call for Action and as part of this project he focused on whether a policy of zero tolerance is appropriate in a dental education setting.

Dr. Guarente was disappointed to see the program end. He added, "This program has been the highlight of my professional development and I hope that BUGSDM continues to nominate faculty for participation. It is important to develop leaders within dental education and this program gives you the tools necessary to become a leader."

"Dr. Guarente is a wonderful example of BUGSDM faculty pursuing professional development as they strive to go from good to great," said Dean ad interim Dr. Jeffrey Hutter. "BUGSDM is in good stead in it’s pursuit of excellence with faculty members such as Dr. Guarente leading the way."
