Graduating Students Celebrate Achievements at OKU Induction

An induction ceremony for the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) Lambda Mu Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society (OKU) was held on April 30 at the Castle. The induction was presided over by OKU chapter President Dr. Stephen Polins, OKU chapter Secretary Dr. Sydell Shaw, and Dean ad interim Dr. Jeffrey Hutter. For the first time in several years this event was held independently of other commencement events.

"Tonight marks a renewed commitment here at BUGSDM to mark this auspicious and solemn occasion with this separate and special event," said Dean ad interim Dr. Jeffrey Hutter. "In prior years this induction has been part of larger commencement events but I feel very strongly that your achievement warrants an appropriate and special event."

Twenty-two graduating students were inducted into OKU based on their academic achievement, demonstration of exemplary traits of character, and potential qualities of future professional growth. In addition, two BUGSDM faculty members, Clinical Associate Professor Dr. Ronnie Schnell and Assistant Professor Dr. Joseph Calabrese, were inducted as honorary members. Faculty members were chosen for induction based on their contributions to the profession.

Dr. Polins congratulated the large group of qualified inductees adding, "This induction welcomes worthy young professional to the dental profession."

Dr. Shaw encouraged the graduates to pursue a lifetime of learning and growth, and wrapped up the ceremony with a quote from Sir Winston Churchill, "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."
