OMFS Resident Takes First Prize in Scientific Poster Competition

Mark Jesin OMFS 12 won first prize for the poster he presented at the Annual Session of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA) held in Key Biscane, Florida in May 2010.
Dr. Jesin’s presentation was titled, "Anesthetic Management of the Dental Outpatient on Psychotropic Medications," and was co-authored by Drs. Stephanie E. Rashewsky and Laurence Levine. An abstract will be published in next edition of Anesthesia Progress, the official publication of the ADSA.
"This project was a systematic literature review to assess the current state of knowledge on the anesthetic management of the dental outpatient on psychotropic medications," said Dr. Jesin. "We reviewed the literature, found out the prevalence of psychotropic use in dental patients, and learned about drug interactions and safety concerns. In addition, we made recommendations for the anesthetic management of these patients."
Dr. Jesin and his co-authors found that most of the literature they reviewed on psychiatric problems in the dental outpatient was anecdotal or incomplete. Ultimately, they would like to create definitive guidelines for anesthetic management of the dental outpatient as a resource for dental professionals. They hope that by creating these definitive guidelines they will be able to minimize risks and potential complications.
