Fourth Applied Strategic Planning Retreat a Resounding Success

The Applied Strategic Planning (ASP) Committee met for its fourth retreat on Monday, September 13 to Wednesday, September 15. The retreat began Monday afternoon and continued through a working dinner that evening. That was followed by two full-day sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday that were facilitated by Dr. Bob Frazer of R. L. Frazer and Associates. R.L Frazer and Associates is the consulting firm that was hired by Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) to facilitate the ASP process.
Building on the first retreat in October, the second retreat in January, the third retreat in March, and on the work that has happened since then, the committee finalized objectives and Integrated Action Plans (IAP) to achieve the goals previously identified and finalized. The goals were finalized from their draft form after each committee member consulted with their shadow teams after the March retreat. “I am very pleased with the progress that the ASP Committee and by extension, the entire community has made toward developing an Applied Strategic Plan,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. He added, “I will be sharing our plan with President Brown later in the Fall and once approved we will meet as a School community to review and discuss how our Applied Strategic Plan will help us become the premier center for oral health education, research, and care in the world.”
Dean Hutter continued, "I’d also like to thank Drs. Celeste Kong and John Guarente for the outstanding job they have done as Co-chairs of the Applied Strategic Planning Committee. They have both dedicated a great deal of time and effort to this process and the progress that the Committee has made is a direct reflection of their excellent leadership."
The next step of the ASP process will be for Committee members to finalize their IAPs and share the documents with their respective shadow teams. If you have not been contacted about joining a shadow team and would like to participate please contact ASP Co-chairs Drs. Kong or Guarente. Drs. Kong and Guarente will be updating the community with more detailed next steps in the coming weeks.
The architectural firm selected to work with GSDM on facility issues, SmithGroup, attended and participated in the ASP September retreat. SmithGroup has been working with the ASP Committee and a smaller GSDM steering committee to analyze existing space and utilization, understand future direction and needs, and develop and present several facility solution options. SmithGroup is the oldest continuously practicing architecture firm in the United States with a national network of offices. The representatives from SmithGroup working on the GSDM project have spent their careers working in the Health Care, Science & Technology, and Learning sectors of architecture, engineering, and interiors planning.
A final retreat for a selected group of ASP Committee members, Goal Champions, will be held November 8 and 9.
