Oral & Maxillofacial Completes Successful Accreditation Site Visit

The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is pleased to announce that they successfully completed their October 19, accreditation site visit from the Commission on Dental Accreditation. They did not receive any recommendations or suggestions by the site visitors, so pending a final meeting of the Commission on Dental Accreditation they will have full accreditation status without reporting requirements.
Director of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program/Advanced Specialty Education Program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at BMC and GSDM Dr. David Cottrell said, “I have personally been involved with the last four site visits here at GSDM and this was the smoothest. The Department is in a very strong position with a large number of highly qualified faculty, a complex and voluminous surgical caseload, and excellent administrative support.”
The site visitors were Dr. George Kushner from the University of Louisville, Dr. Rawle Philbett from Lincoln Medical Center, and Dr. Dale Baur from Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Cottrell added, “The Commission on Dental Accreditation was extremely impressed with the comprehensive didactic and surgical education the residents are receiving, and commented on the outstanding support we receive from the Office of Advanced Education. The evaluators also felt the addition of Dr. Andrew Salama, with his expertise in the treatment of head and neck cancer, was an important addition to the School of Dental Medicine and Boston Medical Center. They were also impressed by our collaborative work with Dr. Leslie Will and the Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics.” He continued, “Special thanks from the evaluators went out to Ms. Cheryl Flynn for organizing and coordinating all of the logistics for such a smooth accreditation process.”
Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter added, “Congratulations to Drs. Cottrell, Mehra, and Salama and to all of the faculty and staff of the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, for the outstanding job they did preparing for accreditation. I’d also like to extend my thanks to Associate Dean for Advanced Education & International Programs Dr. Thomas Kilgore for all the support he provided the Department.”
The accreditation process for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery occurs every 5 years, with the next visit scheduled for 2016.
