School Installs Digital Radiography System

May 18, 2005. Last week the school installed a panoramic/cephalometric digital radiograph system on the first floor. The new technology, donated by Kodak, provides high-defnition images that can be manipulated to help faculty and students provide the most accurate diagnoses quickly and efficiently. Instead of film, the system uses digital sensors that are covered with sterile bags before each patient.

"It provides immediate results," says Dr. Anita Gohel, assistant professor of diagnostic sciences and patient services. "You can enlarge the image, measure the root length right on screen, and bring the image up at different workstations."

The school is using the technology for emergency patients only; once BUSDM implements an entirely paperless record system, all patients will be evaluated and diagnosed using digital radiography.
