PROS Residents Win Top Honors at ACP Meeting
BUSDM swept away the competition at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Natick October 13 as prosthodontics residents Drs. Mohammed Bahanshal and Nawaf Al-Dousari earned top honors in the Steven R. Gordon Memorial Essay Contest hosted by the Massachusetts section of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP).
A panel of judges, which heard presentations on a range of topics from prosthodontics residents at BUSDM and Harvard School of Dental Medicine, chose Bahanshal to receive first prize for his essay, “Effect of Nanofibers on Crack Propagation in In-Ceram Alumina Ceramics.” Al-Dousari received second place for his presentation, “An Uncomplicated Method for the Fabrication of a Metal-Reinforced, Long-Term Provisional Restoration.”
Achieving the top two prizes "confirms that the BUSDM prosthodontics program provides residents with excellent clinical training and outstanding opportunities to conduct scholarly research," says Dr. Steven Morgano, director of the postdoctoral program in prosthodontics and president of the Massachusetts section of the ACP. "A major component of the program is the development of professional presentation skills," he adds.
The event featured presentations from BUSDM faculty, including Dr. Serge Dibart, who discussed "Microsurgery in Periodontal Plastic Surgery," and Dr. Morgano, who spoke on "An Evidence-Based Approach to the Restoration of Pulpless Teeth with the Use of Posts-and-Cores." The essay contest honors the late Dr. Steven R. Gordon, a prosthodontist and BUSDM faculty member who died in 1992.
