OMFS Resident Dr. Hasnain Shinwari Awarded Research Summit Travel Scholarship

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) resident Hasnain Shinwari OMFS 15 was recently awarded a 2013 Resident Research Summit Scholarship by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). The scholarship reimbursed up to $1,000 of travel expenses for Dr. Shinwari’s attendance to the AAOMS/OMSF/IAOMS Young Investigators’ Day and Research Summit, held May 1–3, 2013, in Rosemont, Illinois.
At the Young Investigators’ Day and Research Summit, Dr. Shinwari heard from leading experts in the field of OMFS, who talked about their experiences and why they chose to go into research and academics. He also attended research and clinical presentations from oral surgeons from around the world.
Reflecting on the importance of the experience, Dr. Shinwari said, “In senior year, one of the things that people always ask themselves is whether they should go into academics or private practice.” Dr. Shinwari continued, “It was very important for me to hear both from the experts that spend their career in private practice and those who work in research and academics.”
Dr. Shinwari holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan (2004). Among Dr. Shinwari’s areas of research are learning the efficacy of orthognathic surgery in reducing TMJ pain and cases involving osteomyelitis.
Said Chair of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs Dr. Pushkar Mehra,
“It is heartening to note that Dr. Shinwari has been awarded this scholarship. The AAOMS Research Summit is aimed to promote research in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. It brings together clinicians and researchers with varying experiences with an objective to promote interdepartmental and multi-disciplinary research and develop protocols for new clinical trials. The scholarship provided Dr. Shinwari an opportunity to network and meet with other fellow OMS residents from all over the nation.”
Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter said, “Congratulations to Dr. Shinwari on receiving the Resident Research Scholarship. Dr. Shinwari’s achievement is concordant with the mission of Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine to promote excellence in dental research.”
