Members of the Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) community—and members of the general Boston University Medical Center (BUMC) community—gathered in the Hiebert Lounge on August 11, 2015 for a special EID Dinner, which was sponsored by the GSDM Muslim Student Association (MSA) and BUSM’s Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.

The Eid Dinner marked the end of the holy month of Ramadan. All members of the GSDM and BUMC community were encouraged to attend the dinner, which featured Halal catering provided by the Black Seed Café.

About 80 members of the GSDM and BUMC community attended the Eid Dinner, which took place from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The attendees of the dinner mingled with each other while eating Halal food and taking in the views of Boston that are provided by the Hiebert Lounge.

“The Eid Dinner had about 80 guests in attendance, with food options including hummus, kabobs, and Arab sweets known as ‘kunafa,’” said MSA President Amr Aly DMD 17.

After all the attendees had settled down with their Halal food, several people gave brief remarks.

Speakers included Professor and Chair of Radiology at Boston Medical Center Dr. Alexander Norbash; Professor of Anesthesiology and Associate Dean for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Boston University School of Medicine Dr. Rafael Ortega; and MSA President Amr Aly DMD 17.

The Eid Dinner also featured guest speaker Dr. Mariam Ismail, who is the founder of the Boston Muslim Young Professionals organization and currently a Professor at Simmons College in the Department of Chemistry.

A little more than a month prior to the EID Dinner, on June 30, the MSA also sponsored a special Ramdan Iftar Dinner, which also took place in the Hiebert Lounge. Aly says he hopes these celebrations allow Muslim members of the GSDM community to celebrate their religion while allowing all members of the GSDM community to learn more about Muslim traditions.

“The Muslim Student Association’s continued commitment to planning inclusive opportunities like the Eid Dinner certainly help strengthen the GSDM community,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. “I am proud of Amr, the MSA, and all who had a hand in planning the Eid Dinner celebration in the Hiebert Lounge.”
