AAPHD Volunteers at Bay Cove Human Services Annual Wellness Fair

IMG_8641On Thursday, September 14, 2017, the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) chapter of the American Association of Public Health Dentists (AAPHD) volunteered at the annual Wellness Fair organized by Bay Cove Human Services. Six members of the GSDM community volunteered at the event held in Jamaica Plain.

The Wellness Fair is held each year to increase health awareness through education and prevention. Attendees of the health fair were offered basic health screenings; blood pressure and glucose checks; as well as provided with a variety of informational packets designed to raise awareness of the many health-related programs, services, and providers located in the surrounding community.

The team from GSDM was at the event to provide oral health education, promotion, referrals, and even screenings. At the conclusion of the event, GSDM had screened 23 attendees.

Bay Cove Human Services is a private, not-for-profit corporation that provides a wide variety of services to individuals and their families who face the challenges of developmental disabilities, aging, mental illness and drug and alcohol addiction.

The volunteers from GSDM were: Stephen Brand DMD 19; Usman Iqbal (preceptor); Shahmir Akbar Khan (preceptor); Bora Lin DMD 19; Ms. Kathy Lituri, Oral Health Promotion Director in the Department of Health Policy & Health Services Research; and Emily Pipilas (predental).
