Students: People Constantly Changing the World
Students matter.
Couldn’t let the month pass without a shout out to students who decided that they matter.
They took a play from Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin – from the vibe of the black power on the horizon – and decided that to standup, they would sit down. Immovable. No one would turn them around. They were charming, unflinching, peaceful, without malice or violence, confrontational, lovingly defiant. Fifty years ago this month, students – young folk – in North Carolina, stopped at a lunch counter and started and created an international strategy for change – the sit-in. (No, not gansta, but Gandhi.)
They established a true ministry and movement of presence. Silent passion and human dignity could change the world.
What will inspire us to change our world? To create new strategies for change? To join in? Will it be a blog post? A song? An essay? A tweet? A status update? Much respect – students still matter. What will we stand – or sit and blog – for?
Peace.
