Call for applications: Jeanne Marandon Fellowships (2016-2017)
Candidates must be U.S. citizens, be affiliated with an American college or university, become members of the SPFFA at the time of their application and have a sufficient command of spoken and written French to pursue their proposed studies and/or research in France or in Québec. Applications in all disciplines are considered, but applicants in literature, art, music, history, social sciences and communications have priority. Candidates not yet having studied or pursued a research project in the country for which they are applying also have priority. The exact stipend depends (ranging from US$1,500 to US $25,000) on the academic level of the proposed project and the length of stay requested. Fellowships 2016-2017 are awarded at five levels:
1. Post-doctoral Scholars whose rank is no higher than Assistant Professor and who have received their degree no more than seven years prior to the start of the fellowship period.
Candidates’ applications must include the following documents: (a) a letter in French explaining the reasons for their application; (b) a curriculum vitae which includes their current and permanent postal addresses and an e-mail address, the primary and secondary schools they attended, their stays in francophone countries, the grants and fellowships they have previously received for study abroad, and other fellowships for which they are currently applying; (c) a research proposal indicating why the proposed stay is necessary to complete the project, for example, what documents and what archives are to be consulted, and a timetable for the fellowship period as complete as possible at the time of their application; (d) a bibliography of primary and secondary sources, (e) three letters of recommendation, which may be in English, including one from a specialist in the field; (f) a statement of financial resources and a tentative budget for the fellowship period.
Post-doctoral fellowships are $25,000 for the academic year, payable in two installments. Summer and one-semester fellowships are prorated accordingly and payable shortly before the beginning of the fellowship period.
2. Graduate students preparing a doctoral thesis.
Candidates’ applications must include the following documents: (a) a letter in French explaining the reasons for their application, (b) a curriculum vitae which includes their current and permanent postal addresses and an e-mail address, the primary and secondary schools they attended, their stays in francophone countries, the grants and fellowships they have previously received for study abroad, and other fellowships for which they are currently applying; (c) a thesis proposal that must indicate why the proposed stay is necessary to complete the thesis; for example, what documents and what archives are to be consulted, and a timetable for the fellowship period as complete as possible at the time of their application, (d) complete original transcripts at the graduate and undergraduate levels; (e) three letters of recommendation, which may be in English, including one from the thesis director; (f) a statement of financial resources and a tentative budget for the fellowship period.

3. Students enrolled in an M. A. or M.A.T. Program.

This letter must include their current and permanent postal addresses and an e-mail address; (b) complete original transcripts; (c) three letters of recommendation, including one from the Department Chair and, if possible, one from a member of the SPFFA; (d) a statement of financial resources and a tentative budget for the fellowship period.
As soon as candidates have registered in the program of their choice, they must send an electronic copy of their certificate of registration to the SPFFA at the address below.
Fellowships for students enrolled in an M.A. or M.A.T. program are $12,000 for the academic year, payable in two installments. Summer and one-semester fellowships are prorated accordingly and payable shortly before the beginning of the fellowship period.
4. Undergraduate Students.
Candidates’ applications must include the following documents: (a) a letter in French explaining the reasons for their application. This letter must include their current and permanent postal addresses and an e-mail address; (b) complete transcripts (high school transcripts are accepted for freshmen); (c) two letters of recommendation, including one from the Department Chair and, if possible, one from a member of the SPFFA,
As soon as candidates have registered in the program of their choice, they must send a copy of their certificate of registration to the SPFFA at the address below.
Fellowships for undergraduate students are $10,000 for the academic year, payable in two installments. Summer and one-semester fellowships are prorated accordingly and payable shortly before the beginning of the fellowship period.
5. Candidates to a “mini-bourse” (mini-scholarship)
Candidates must have at least a 3.5 GPA and provide a transcript – unofficial transcripts are accepted– as well as a letter of intent describing their project, or the program to which they are applying. Candidates must also be registered in the program of their choice and provide proof of registration at the time of application. These scholarships are primarily aimed at students or researchers who want to spend a short period (three months or less) in France or Québec. The amount of the scholarship is $1,500.

Candidates at all levels are strongly advised to contact the university of their choice as soon as possible as well as the nearest French Consulate in the U.S. to determine the current requirements for student visas. They must also agree in their application that they will submit to the SPFFA, upon returning, a report on their activities in France.
To ensure candidates’ membership in the SPFFA, all 2016-2017 Marandon Fellowship applications must be accompanied by a check for $20 payable to the SPFFA.
