The SRAS has alerted us to several opportunities for study abroad in the post-Soviet space for students interested in international relations, security studies, political science, and conflict studies. Security and Society in the Information Age (Warsaw, Poland)
Study global security issues from unique perspectives. Our 2020 summer school course lineup includes security, terrorism and hybrid warfare, genocide studies, democracy studies, and technology and society. A full semester of study includes these course and others in areas of international relations, security, and diplomacy. Year-round, our students engage in a research internship with the Terrorism Research Center,where they contribute to the center’s publications. Open to M.A. and upper-level B.A. students.
The Cuba-Russia Connection: Studies in Cultural Diplomacy
This 5-week summer program starts with 12 days in Havana, Cuba with the remainder of the course in St. Petersburg, Russia. It provides a very intensive introduction to the history, culture, foreign policy, and economy of these two countries through the lens of cultural diplomacy.
The Changing Energy Landscape (St. Petersburg, Russia)
This 3-week summer program aims to generate a discussion of the reasons for and the consequences of oil price dynamics and its implications for other fossil fuels, as well as its relation to international de-carbonization efforts. We will focus on the latest developments in the Russian energy sector, as a central piece in the European energy market, and the implications of sanctions for its further development.
This interdisciplinary course is aimed at students of economics, business, world economy, political science, international relations, energy studies/security, and sustainability studies.
Diplomacy and International Relations at MGIMO (Moscow, Russia)
This semester program at Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) is designed for upperclassmen and M.A. students interested in international relations, diplomacy, law, and/or economics. Study alongside future political and business leaders at Russia’s leading institution for international studies. Enjoy an extensive range of fascinating courses in Russian and/or English and regular opportunities to attend talks given by visiting diplomats, politicians, religious leaders, and other experts – and gain valuable insights into Russia’s foreign policy.
Policy and Conflict in the Post-Soviet Space (Kyiv, Ukraine)
This semester program seeks to critically analyze the post-Soviet era. Based in Kyiv, Ukraine, students will also visit Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Russia to for an in-depth study of identity and conflict in the region.
Central Asian Studies (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan)
This semester program provides an intensive introduction to the geopolitics, history, and culture of Central Asia paired with language study (Russian and/or Central Asian languages). Based in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, students will travel to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.
