Call for Papers
The Chronic Diseases and Conditions in Asia Symposium aims to provide a platform for both undergraduate and graduate students to explore various research topics at the Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus. A non-communicable disease (NCD) is a non-infectious and non-transmissible medical condition. Claiming the lives of approximately 36 million people every year, NCDs include cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, and cancer. As these conditions continue to proliferate in many parts of the world, the role of Public Health becomes ever more important in adapting and combating this transition. Given that an annual estimate of 7.9 million fall victims to NCDs in Southeast Asia alone, the Johns Hopkins Public Health Symposium will focus on the Asian region to identify and address some of the grave problems and trends involving NCDs. To further discussion, we propose the following topic areas:
1. What correlation exists between NCDs and socio-economic status? Are there any other social, cultural, and political factors that should be taken into consideration to understand the proliferation of NCDs?
2. What measures are being taken to address and prevent NCDs? What are the roles of governments and non-governmental institutions in this process?
3. What are some of the major obstacles in preventing and addressing NCDs in Asia? What do you propose as a possible solution?
We seek paper proposals from students interested in aforementioned questions and related areas such as Public Health, Sociology, East Asian Studies, International Studies, Anthropology, and Global Environmental Changes and Sustainability. Proposals should include the paper title, the author’s contact information, and an abstract of
no more than 300 words. The deadline for proposal submission is: January 10, 2015.

The Clinton Foundation presents the 2nd annual Women’s Health Codeathon Series, this weekend in Boston!
The Clinton Foundation, in partnership with MIT Hacking Medicine, Jawbone, Ace Hotel and the Innovation Hub at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital is hosting a codeathon focused on women’s mental health. You can find more information about the event here.
This Sunday afternoon teams will be unveiling their creations in front of a live audience and panel of industry experts.
From November 7-9 in Boston, The Clinton Foundation will be bringing together the best minds in tech and design to compete in the 2nd Women’s Health Codeathon Series, hosted in partnership with the Clinton Foundation, Ace Hotel and Jawbone, as well as MIT Hacking Medicine and the Innovation Hub at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
This codeathon will challenge developers and designers to build original and innovative prototypes based on key women’s mental health issues. You can read more about the event here.

Assistant Professor of Medicine, Section of Infectious Diseases, Boston University School of Medicine;
Director of Infection Control, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (NEIDL), Boston University.
Dr. Bhadelia's specialization is in infection control issues related to emerging pathogens and highly communicable infectious diseases. She is the director of the medical response program for BU’s biosafety level 4 laboratories at the NEIDL, one of six such programs in the US.Most recently, she has been part of the World Health Organization operations in Sierra Leone to combat the Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014. She is also an instructor for the CDC/FEMA healthcare worker preparedness course for the Ebola Response. She will return to West Africa later this month to work with Partners in Health in Liberia.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the epidemiology of the 2014 West Africa Ebola Epidemic.
2. Master knowledge of virus, its modes of transmission and available therapeutics.
3. Understand clinical care related to Ebola in resource limited setting.

Delivering on Our Promises: Tools for Nursing Advocacy in Global Health
The Global Nursing Caucus Conference will be held on October 31st and November 1st at UMass Boston, Boston MA. Join us to learn about initiatives that reflect the growing impact of nurses in global health and learn about tools to promote nursing advocacy locally and globally. It is going to be a very exciting time, with virtual and in-person participants from Haiti, Oman, Rwanda, Kenya, Mexico, and the US. This is a wonderful opportunity for clinicians and students to interact with some of the region’s leaders in global health. Nursing leadership from the Peace Corps, Johns Hopkins University, Clinton Global Health Initiative, Boston University, Partners in Health and the Brigham and Massachusetts General Hospital Global Health programs will all be represented at the conference. A great chance to network for clinicians, faculty and students who are interested in global health practice and research.
