March 14, 2019:

Hub & Pub Next Week!

  • Please join us for the next Hub & Pub Series: Conversations on Teaching & Learning on Wednesday, March 20, 3:30-5:00 pm in the BU Hub office on the 5th floor of the GSU. We will explore the Hub areas of The Individual in Community and Creativity/Innovation, and guest speakers will include Sophie Godley (School of Public Health), Caleb Farny (College of Engineering), and Rachel Spekman and Blake Sims (Innovate@BU).  A selection of seasonal beers, wines, and hors d’oeuvres will be offered.

BU Hub Experiences – Opportunities to Share with Students

  • The Cross-College Challenge (XCC): Although they are not formally in the Hub, juniors and seniors from all 10 undergraduate schools are highly encouraged to enroll in the XCC, an interdisciplinary project-based elective course, to develop and apply the collaborative and innovative skills that employers prize.  Pilot sections of XCC (HUB XC 433) continue in fall 2019 with a variety of projects on subjects such as Challenging Inequities in Elementary Education (Sec. A1), Equipping Students with Social Activism Tools (Sec. D1), and Cross-Cultural Exploration of Music (Sec. B1). For more information, please visit here.
  • All student teams taking part in the spring 2019 XCC will be displaying their final presentations on Saturday, April 27 in the GSU Ziskind Lounge. Students and guests may RSVP in advance here.
  • Hub Cocurriculars: Students can sign up this spring to participate in a Hub cocurricular in fall 2019. Open to all BU undergraduates, Hub cocurriculars are ungraded, 0-credit learning experiences that combine activities, discussion, and reflection and allow students to explore their interests outside of the classroom while earning a Hub unit.  Students can register for Hub cocurriculars on the Student Link as they would for a course.  For more information and a listing of available Hub cocurriculars, please visit here.

  BU Hub Curriculum Development

  • Hub Courses: The University Council General Education Committee (GEC) has now approved 750 courses and cocurricular learning experiences for inclusion in the BU Hub.
  • Hub Deadlines: For AY 2020 (spring-only and summer-only courses), the deadline for submitting Hub courses to the GEC is March 15, 2019.  All proposals for the AY 2019-2020 year should now be submitted. A listing of proposal deadlines can be found on the Hub website.
  • Priority Areas of Development: Please visit here to see important areas of the Hub curriculum that still need to be developed, including courses that focus on the following Hub areas: Scientific Inquiry II or Social Inquiry II (Learning Outcome 2); Digital/Multimedia Expression; Writing-Intensive Course; The Individual in Community; and Creativity/Innovation.
  • Cross-Listing Courses with the XCC: The Cross-College Challenge (XCC) is currently seeking existing BU courses to cross-list as HUB XC “###” in 2019-2020. Faculty from all disciplines are encouraged to teach the XCC, modeling interdisciplinary collaboration within their sections. Participants will have flexibility with incorporating Hub learning outcomes into their syllabi and in deciding how to use class time (lecture vs. project work) as well as the opportunity to develop their own tools and techniques.  For more information, please visit here.
  • Hub Courses & Summer Term: Please note that only courses approved for the Hub for AY 2018-2019 will carry Hub units in summer 2019.  If you have any questions about whether a course will carry Hub units this summer, please contact the Hub office at thehub@bu.edu or 617-358-6535.
  • CTL Workshops: The Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) has a series of stipended Hub workshops scheduled for the spring, including New Course Development Institutes and Hub cocurricular workshops.

As always, if you have any questions about the BU Hub, please contact us at
thehub@bu.edu or 617-358-6535.
