Below is a checklist of the items you need to request a new I-20 和 apply for an extension of your 选择性实习训练（OPT） in a 科学、技术、工程或数学（STEM） major field of study.

To apply for the STEM OPT 扩展, you will need to initiate a STEM OPT extension request through the ISSOPortal.  Once your request has been processed 和 you have received your new I-20 with an OPT recommendation you can apply to 美国入籍与移民服务局 for the STEM OPT extension directly to 美国入籍与移民服务局.

Preparing to Apply for STEM 扩展:

Meet with your employer to complete the 美国入籍与移民服务局 表格i - 983 Training Plan for STEM OPT.

  • Further information about the Form I-983 can be found 在这里.
  • If you are a recent graduate working at BU, your department must submit the 办理入境手续要求 to the ISSO Scholar Services Team.  After this is reviewed, your 学者顾问 will provide required details to complete your I-983 和 I-765.  This means that you will need to complete this step prior to requesting a STEM OPT 扩展 through the ISSOPortal。 Your BU employer should refer to ISSO 指导方针 on hiring employees in STEM OPT.

Applying for for STEM 基于先前学位的扩展:

  • The prior degree was conferred by a U.S. educational institution that is accredited 和 SEVP-certified at the time the student’s DSO recommends the student for the 24-month OPT extension;
