LAS Center Travel Grants – Sarai Garcia
As part of a scholarship granted by the Latin American Studies program, I travelled to Mexico City in order to locate documents pertaining to the SEP’s radio station, now housed at the “Archivo General de la Nación.” I reviewed the letters of the intellectuals of the avent-garde Estridentismo who completed national projects for the SEP, as well as letters from radio listeners regarding Germán List Arzubide’s project “Troka el Poderoso, Children’s Stories.” I also had the opportunity to find and buy books about Estridentismo, the avant-garde, and Mexican radio, which are very difficult to obtain in the USA. All this material—together with an interview about the avant-garde and children’s literature by Antonio Malpica, a prolific author of children’s literature in Mexico—was possible through the summer grant provided by the Latin American Studies program. All this will be extremely helpful in carrying out my doctoral research. – Sarai Garcia
