Crank Up the Volume
Nicole “Neelu” Mohaghegh (BSBA’18) helps musicians turn it up loud
When Nicole “Neelu” Mohaghegh played classical Persian music on the piano for her Iranian parents, she often scrapped the sheet music and created her own melodies. Through grade school, Mohaghegh (BSBA’18) found ways to make every open-ended assignment music related. And at Questrom, she answers questions with a music spin: business law classes soon turn into a debate on artist contracts.
Mohaghegh is committed to finding her own way of bringing music to life. Outside of class, she’s a DJ, an editorial intern at a music news site, and the cofounder of the BU Music Business Club, which manages student artists.
As president and events planner for the club, Mohaghegh helps artists find gigs and brings successful music professionals to campus to share their perspectives. The club also releases albums, produces music videos and photo shoots, and manages artists’ social media platforms. Mohaghegh’s on-air career started with her own new music show on BU’s award-winning student radio station, WTBU. “Discussing it [music] on air, reviewing it, and keeping up with it, sharing my ideas and opinions was just so exciting,” she says. Today, she hosts a weekly program mixing music and talk.
Mohaghegh hopes to make a career of promoting and celebrating artists. She established the BU chapter of Verge Campus, an online multimedia platform where millennials talk about music, film, and more. As editor-in-chief, she’s had to learn graphic design, public speaking, and music journalism. She hopes to create her own multimedia company that gives artists the “ability to truly promote and distribute and showcase their music.”
