“Donne’s Partings”

John Donne was preoccupied throughout his life with the subject of valediction. In this talk, Professor Targoff explored the ways in which this obsession with parting pervades both the erotic and devotional registers of his works, from his earliest love lyrics through his final sermons.
Ramie Targoff is Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of English and American Literature at Brandeis University. She is the author of Common Prayer: The Language of Public Devotion in Early Modern England (Chicago, 2001) andJohn Donne, Body and Soul (Chicago, April 2008).
