Beginning September 1, 2020, Clinical Assistant Professor Phillipe Copeland (BUSSW) will join a select group of Boston University faculty as a new member of the Initiative on Cities’ (IOC) Faculty Advisory Board, a core component of the IOC’s leadership team.

The IOC, an institution housed at Boston University, was founded in 2014 by former Boston mayor Thomas Menino and political science professor Graham Wilson to promote adaptive, inclusive and sustainable urban leadership. Since 2014, the IOC has established many successful programs – including the MetroBridge program and the Public Impact Scholars program – and facilitated a wide range of research, events and partnerships.

Copeland, a clinical assistant professor at BU School of Social Work, is an expert on racial justice, mass incarceration, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Copeland is a nationally recognized scholar and has helped lead numerous social justice-based initiatives, most recently including the Grand Challenge to Promote Smart Decarceration, a project of the American Academy of Social Work & Social Welfare (AASWSW) for which he currently serves as co-lead.

The IOC’s Faculty Advisory Board has previously included BUSSW professors Astraea Augsberger and Ruth Paris as well as current board member and professor Judith Gonyea, BUSSW’s associate dean for faculty affairs.
