Dean’s Message on Presidential Election Results

November 7, 2020

Dear members of the BUSSW community,

As a community rooted in the values of justice, compassion and universal well-being, we’ve felt a profound calling to reverse the many policies and programs that were put in place in the last four years that hurt so many families and communities.

We’ve worried and lamented. We’ve mourned losses of life. We’ve fought for change.

And now, change is here. With the news that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are the president and vice president-elect, respectively, I’m hopeful – confident, even – that the programs and policies that will be implemented will be more in line with our social work values.

Still, it doesn’t mean our work gets any easier. As social workers, we’ll need to find renewed strength to partner with organizations and communities to heal and engage in positive growth.  And, we need to remain vigilant for the long haul. It’s on us to keep holding our elected leaders accountable – and to prevent those who would do harm from gaining power in the first place. We cannot be complacent.

But we can be grateful, in this moment, for a new day, for a new chance as a people, for renewed hope.

I celebrate that gratitude with you and look forward to what we’ll achieve together in this new era.

Sincerely,

Dean Delva
