The Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) will host a webinar discussing COVID-19 and state violence’s impact on tenure and promotion, organized by Professor Linda Sprague Martinez and featuring Professor Judith Gonyea among an expert panel of social work academics. Many educational institutions have begun acknowledging the long-term ramifications of COVID on academic careers and trajectories. Particularly, the pandemic has disrupted productivity and leadership opportunities like tenure and promotion for women and faculty of color: groups that have been inequitable long before the rise of COVID-19. This webinar will focus on COVID’s unique impact on these groups, including:

  • The growing demands of multiple roles and responsibilities in both personal and professional spheres
  • The alarming increase in racism, xenophobia, and state violence toward racial and ethnic minorities

Some modifications have been made by institutions to address these changes (e.g. tenure timeline adjustments, broadening productivity measures, and shifting academic achievement priorities). However, SSWR seeks to address other important questions about navigating tenure and promotion processes during the COVID-19 era.
