Dean Delva Joins Committee Charged with Reviewing Federally-Funded Programs Fighting the Opioid Addiction Epidemic
March 21, 2019

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine selected BUSSW Dean Jorge Delva to join an ad hoc committee charged with reviewing outcomes achieved by four specific programs funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), as part of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA). The committee will then make recommendations to Congress on whether appropriate resources are being allocated to ensure cost-effectiveness in the Federal government’s response to the opioid addiction epidemic.
The specific CARA programs are Building Communities of Recovery, State Pilot Grant Program for Treatment for Pregnant and Postpartum Women, First Responders, and Improving Access to Overdose Treatment. The review will result in three reports over five years.
The first report will recommend outcomes and metrics for each of the four programs; the second will assess their progress, and the third and final report will evaluate each program’s effectiveness in achieving their respective goals.
