‘Model Minority’ Panel Brings Hahm to State House
Associate Professor Dr. Hyeouk “Chris” Hahm participates in a first-of-its-kind panel discussion on the “model minority” myth at the Massachusetts State House this week. The event, hosted by the House Asian Caucus and State Representative Tackey Chan, will address the effects and perpetuation of the “model minority” myth and outline strategies for combatting the stereotype. Dr. Hahm will also present on mental health trends among Asian-Americans and look at why legislative and governing bodies don’t allocate adequate resources to Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.
In addition to Dr. Hahm, the panelists include Dr. Phitsamay Uy, associate professor of Education at University of Massachusetts Lowell; and Paul Niwa, associate professor of Journalism at Emerson College. The event is moderated by Bora Chiemruom, a commissioner and former executive director of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Asian American Commission.
