Tiffany L. Steinwert

Born in 1974, Tiffany L. Steinwert grew up with a passion for justice. She had a profound desire to feed people, as she recalled to Christine Yackel of Syracuse University Magazine. As she remembers, “My family was one generation removed from poverty, so I’ve been passionate about justice all my life.” At the tender age of five, she went door-to-door, collecting canned food. In Yackel’s article, Steinwert candidly remembers her own faith journey, struggling with God’s call in her own life. It was after a mission trip to rural Nicaragua that she came to understand that theology could have practical implications for people on the ground. This discovery led Steinwert to the Boston University School of Theology, where she obtained an M.Div. (2001) and a Ph.D. (2009) in practical theology. Her 2009 dissertation is entitled, “Homosexuality and United Methodist Church.” While in the Boston area, she worked as a senior pastor of Cambridge Welcoming Ministries, which is a United Methodist mission seeking to minister to LGBT persons. As her life’s work unfolds, it is her hope to be a prophetic voice in the world, challenging poverty, racism, sexism, and homophobia. Linked with her passion for justice is a drive to build diverse community across many boundaries.

Steinwert is partnered to Joshua Arrowood, and they have one child together, Grady. Steinwert is currently the dean of Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University.
