The Conversation: Professor outlines presidential candidates' religious affiliations
Nancy T. Ammerman, professor of sociology of religion at the School of Theology, writes an article for The Conversation entitled, “Should voters care about candidates’ religious views?” Professor Ammerman breaks down the religious affiliations of the candidates in the 2016 president campaign and discusses some of the features of each group. She names candidates who are actively engaging in religious conversations and those who may have a religious affiliation but are not actively participating in religious dialogue.
The article makes several points about the significance of a candidate’s religious ties as well as many other aspects of potential influence on political views. Ammerman writes, “just knowing a given politician’s affiliation isn’t the whole answer.” Professor Ammerman’s article describes a concern that religion not be overemphasized or underplayed. “Religious conversations may be important conversations, but they are never the only ones,” says Professor Ammerman.
