Elizabeth Stanley
Elizabeth is a long-time marketing and advertising professional, with over 25 years of experience. She has many years of public speaking, corporate communications, and investor relations, and was recently the host of a Boston-based radio show. Elizabeth was fortunate to have several years in the agency and corporate world and personally worked with clients such as Sotheby’s, Continental Airlines, Evolution Media Capital, CNN, NBC (The Today Show) to name a few. Elizabeth is an avid entrepreneur and has helped found three companies in the last several years.
Tim Palmer
Tim Palmer BSC is a cinematographer working on high end television drama series for mainstream networks and streaming services. Notable recent credits include ‘The Last Kingdom’ for Netflix, ‘Killing Eve’ for BBC America and ‘Line of Duty’ for Netflix/BBC. Tim was invited to join the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) in 2013 and in the same year was nominated for a Royal Television Society award for his work on ‘The Suspicions of Mr Whicher’. He serves as a governor on the BSC board of governors and is a full member of the British Academy of Film and Television Artists (BAFTA). Tim is currently writing a book for Focal Press/Routledge entitled ‘Cinematography and Lighting for Television’, due for publication in 2023/2024.
David Tochterman
David is an Emmy-nominated producer, media executive and entrepreneur. He is CEO of Canvas Media Studios, a production studio and distributor for television, film and digital media. He has been a digital content pioneer and entrepreneur since the earliest days of YouTube and has closed financing for two digital media companies. David is also a content strategy consultant for global media, advertising and technology companies.
In television, David has developed and produced programming as a show-runner for all major networks, studios and streaming platforms. He was an EVP and executive producer for the Carsey Werner company, where he worked on hit series that won over 20 Emmy Awards and 70 Emmy nominations including That 70s Show, 3rd Rock From The Sun, Grace Under Fire, Roseanne and Cosby. In film, he is currently producing a slate of feature films for streaming platforms in partnership with global distributor Mar Vista Entertainment.
As lecturer at Boston University, David teaches Creative Producing for Film and Television in the undergraduate program and a graduate course in Evolution Of Media. He previously created the Emerging Media curriculum for the launch of Syracuse University’s Los Angeles semester and taught there for three years.
Maureen McCarthy
Maureen McCarthy joined Boston University Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) as its inaugural Director of Communications in January 2023.
Maureen is an accomplished editorial director and content strategist with a distinguished record of delivering effective and impactful digital and print communications. She is an award-winning editor, nationally published journalist, and result-driven communicator dedicated to elevating brands through insightful website content, social media and email campaign marketing, community outreach, and event/conference planning.
In her role and as a member of the administrative leadership team in CDS, Maureen leads the communications and content strategy, overseeing CDS’ editorial and content creation, digital presence, website production, social media, email, and media relations strategy development and implementation efforts. She also oversees CDS’ Events & Programs unit, which executes 70+ faculty and student-focused events annually.
Prior to joining CDS, Maureen led communications efforts for BU Digital Learning & Innovation. She is an adjunct lecturer with BU College of Communication (2022), BU Women’s Guild Communications Chair, a member of BU D&I Allies & Advocates for Faculty & Staff, a recipient of Newbury Center Terrier F1RST training, and a Tri-Alpha National Honor Society inductee.
Before joining BU, Maureen was the editorial director for four wellness magazines and several award-winning companion websites (Gluten-Free Living, Pain-Free Living, and Practical Diabetology), serving as editor-in-chief of Diabetes Self-Management. Maureen’s communications experience also includes elevating the mission of Boston Children’s Hospital as a digital editor and senior writer.
Maureen served as a business correspondent for the Boston Business Journal, covering the Massachusetts high-tech industry. For over a decade, she wrote as a real estate columnist and business and features correspondent for the Patriot Ledger and Enterprise, with her work appearing in numerous local, regional, and national GateHouse Media publications.
Beyond her professional experiences and affiliations, Maureen blends her deep devotion to Boston Children’s Hospital and passion for cooking by preparing home-cooked meals for families at Boston Children’s Yawkey Family Inn, the hospital’s patient-family housing program.
Kathryn Coduto
Kathryn D. Coduto is an assistant professor of media science in the Department of Mass Communication, Advertising and Public Relations. Katy researches the intersections of mass media and interpersonal communication, focusing on how individuals use media to connect with each other and make sense of the world around them. Recent studies have investigated compulsive social media use during major news events and the privacy management practices of individuals across a number of communication technologies, including dating applications and social media. Her work has been published in journals including the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Computers in Human Behavior, Political Communication, and the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media.
Katy teaches courses in research methods, social media analysis, and media effects. Prior to receiving her Ph.D., Katy worked as a research analyst and strategist for Marcus Thomas LLC, an integrated marketing communications company in Cleveland, Ohio.
Adam Boyajy
Adam Boyajy has covered news in the Boston area for close to twenty years. As Producer and Technical Director for BNN News in Studio West, he helped train and develop Boston University students and continues that work now as Faculty Advisor for BUTV10. Boyajy began his news career at CNN New York in 2003 and has also worked for GBH Boston and The Dorchester Reporter. He’s currently the Producer for two weekly News & Politics podcasts; MassINC Polling Group’s The Horse Race and Commonwealth Magazine’s The Codcast. He’s continually inspired by COM students and honored to help them begin their careers in the news industry.
Christopher Hope
Chris Hope, CTS is the founder and executive director of The Loop Lab. Hope graduated from Tufts University, and then received his Masters at Harvard Divinity School. He now serves on the board of advisors for MassHire, and is a Creative Community Fellow for the National Arts Strategies.
Hope is also an accomplished Audio-Video professional and runs his own DEI and staffing company, Equity Intelligence Consulting.
Shawn Zupp
Shawn spent 25 years as an advertising executive at top agencies in New York such as BBDO, Ogilvy, Publicis and R/GA. He worked on a number of high profile brands including Pepsi-Cola, Frito-Lay, Hershey, Target, National Football League, Corona, Bud Light, E*Trade, HBO, Samsung and Johnson & Johnson. Throughout his career in account management, he has partnered with clients in the development of television commercials, brand experiences, digital/social media campaigns, global websites, and mobile, AI-driven platforms. Notable projects include USA Today’s #1 ranked Super Bowl Spot for Pepsi in 1998, launch of the Hershey Times Square New York City store experience and the innovative brand campaign for new e-commerce start up Jet.com, which ultimately was bought by Walmart for 3 billion dollars. He has led well-recognized advertising efforts such as the Cannes Grand Prix award winning HBO Voyeur experience, Effie award winning Pepsi campaigns, and the Emmy-awarded “Love Has No Labels” film for the Ad Council.
I bring real world perspective and experience in advertising to students stemming from 25 years in the center of the advertising world . . . New York. My history and my continued interest remains in advertising management leadership in an era of change. I’ve run agency internship programs at Ogilvy, helped train young executives at the 4A’s, and mentored agency employees at R/GA. I’ve long supported Boston University ad students, hosting them at New York agency tours for two decades and hiring them as interns and staff members. I remain actively engaged with ad agency pros across the industry.
Nivea Canalli Bona
Nivea Canalli Bona truly believes that communication can change the world. She studied journalism in Brazil (her home country) and founded and led a full communication Agency (Priory Comunicação e Design). At Priory, she applied her knowledge of PR and Advertising using various techniques to a range of clients, from the national postal services company (Correios) to global brands like the Deutsch Keune (hair cosmetics) or the American Caliper (HR). After ten years, she decided to share her experience by teaching at a local university. She fell in love with communication research, and 15 years later, she has never stopped.
In addition to articles that she has had published in international journals, she has written four textbooks in Portuguese: Mensagens e Propaganda: Elaboração de Briefing (2004); Publicidade e propaganda: da agência a campanha (2007; 2012); Jornalismo na Sociedade(2017) and Assessoria de Imprensa: uma ponte entre jornalistas e a sociedade (2017), all by Editora Intersaberes.
She has global experience, having researched in Spain and Ireland, but her epistemological roots are in Latin America. Her work focuses on Popular, Alternative, and Citizen Communication, Social Movements, Activism, Alternative Media, and Communication for Development.
She is a member and a former coordinator for the work group Popular, Alternative and Local Communication at Associación Latinoamericana de Investigadores de la Comunicación – ALAIC; and is a member of the International Association of Communication researchers – IAMCR having presented articles at various conferences of both associations.
Nancy Villa
Nancy excels at investigating brand and business challenges, and bringing teams together to inspire one another toward solutions. A champion of the “outside-in” approach to brand thinking, she has spent more than twenty years in NY and Boston agencies, including one of her own, infusing human insights and cultural trends into sharp, effective strategies for global clients.
