Let the trumpets sound! This weekend, Boston University hosts the final rounds of the 2008 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo Competition, the world’s premier forum for trumpet soloists. The inaugural competition, launched 20 years ago at The Ohio State University, was won by Terry Everson, a College of Fine Arts associate professor of music. In the slide show above, Everson gives us the backstory about that winning performance and talks about what makes a trumpet player the best in the world.
Eight finalists from countries all over the world, including BU alum Kevin Maloney (CFA’05), are being judged by three jurors. The competition’s first round was yesterday, October 9. The final concert takes place on Sunday, October 12, in the Tsai Performance Center at 8 p.m., after which the winners will be announced and the prizes presented.
The 2008 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo Competition is administered by the International Trumpet Guild and is sponsored by the guild and the Columbus Foundation. The first prize is $10,000 and the second prize is $5,000.
All rounds of the competition are held at the Tsai Performance Center, 685 Commonwealth Ave., and are free and open to the public. Today’s competition begins at 9 a.m. On Saturday, October 11, the competition continues with events at 2 and 7 p.m. The final round is on Sunday, October 12, at 8 p.m. Click here for a full schedule.
